“Obomba” [Screen Print on Metal]
$400.00
A (literal) warning sign designed to protest President Obama’s policy of assassination via armed drones. Inspired by Cold War fallout shelter signs, the message is screen printed on sheet metal with light-reflective glass beads. (The white background “glows” under certain lighting conditions.)
In 1976, President Gerald Ford issued Executive Order 11905 to clarify U.S. foreign intelligence activities. In a section of the order labeled “Restrictions on Intelligence Activities,” Ford outlawed political assassination: Section 5(g), entitled “Prohibition on Assassination,” states: “No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination.”
Nevertheless…
“It is the strangest of bureaucratic rituals: Every week or so, more than 100 members of the government’s sprawling national security apparatus gather, by secure video teleconference, to pore over terrorist suspects’ biographies and recommend to the president who should be the next to die.”
—Jo Becker and Scott Shane
